What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a weight loss medication whose effectiveness has been proven in clinical studies. It is manufactured by the Danish healthcare company Novo Nordisk. The injection pen is injected under the skin once a week.

Wegovy works by regulating the feeling of hunger. Its use makes you want to eat less. In combination with a healthy diet and exercise, it can help you lose weight.

The medication is available on prescription for people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 and over or 27 and over (with weight-related complaints).

How does Wegovy work?

The medicine works by reducing your appetite. As a result, you consume fewer calories and gradually lose weight.

The active ingredient semaglutide is a medicine known as a GLP-1 agonist. This is the same type of medicine as the weight loss drug Saxenda. These drugs work by getting your body to produce more of a hormone called GLP-1. GLP-1 is a hormone that affects your feeling of hunger.

A rising GLP-1 level slows down digestion and gastric emptying. It affects your appetite as you feel fuller for longer and therefore eat less. Over time, this leads to weight loss.

What are the possible side effects?

As with all prescription medications, side effects can occur. This is particularly possible in the first few months.

The most common side effects of Wegovy include:

– Nausea
– Vomiting
– Diarrhea
– Constipation
– Abdominal pain
– Headache
– Dizziness
– Tiredness
– Upset stomach and heartburn
Most of these side effects should disappear once your body gets used to the medication. Seek medical advice if you experience persistent or worrying side effects.

Who may use it?

The drug is only prescribed to people with a BMI of 30 or more or 27 or more with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure.

You cannot use it if you:

– are pregnant or breastfeeding
– have had an allergic reaction to semaglutide in the past
– have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2)
Several risks may mean that the medicine is not suitable for you, for example if you have the following:
– Problems with the gallbladder
– a history of pancreatitis
– Mental illness and/or suicidal thoughts in the past or present
– Thyroid problems (e.g. hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism)
– Type 2 diabetes and/or diabetic retinopathy
– Problems with the heart rate
– Kidney problems
– Digestive disorders (e.g. Crohn’s disease)
